My Dogs Competed for My Attention!

Living with one dog is a joy. Living with two? That’s a full-time reality show. I learned this the dramatic way when my two dogs—Max, a sweet but clingy golden retriever, and Luna, a clever and sassy husky—decided that I, their humble human, was the ultimate prize in a never-ending competition for attention.

It all started one lazy Sunday morning. I sat down with my coffee and barely got a sip before Max leapt onto the couch and buried his head in my lap. Typical Max. He’s basically a living teddy bear. I was mid-scratch behind his ears when Luna trotted in, took one look at us, and froze. Her eyes narrowed. Game on.

Without hesitation, Luna jumped onto the couch—right on top of Max. He groaned dramatically and tried to wiggle out from under her, but Luna had claimed her throne. She sat tall, puffed out her chest, and plopped her paw directly on my arm. Her message was clear: My turn.

Max, offended, did what any jealous golden would do—he started whining like a siren. Not to be outdone, Luna began howling. So there I was, sandwiched between two dogs in a howling match, wondering if I should just get up and let them settle it without me.

And it didn’t stop there.

Later that day, I threw a toy to Luna, and Max sprinted across the yard, grabbed it mid-air, and dropped it at my feet with a proud tail wag. Then Luna brought me two toys. Max responded by rolling over and showing his belly, his ultimate “pet me” move. Luna retaliated by performing every trick she knew—sit, shake, spin—back-to-back.

By evening, I had two exhausted, needy fluffballs snoring on either side of me. I didn’t get much done that day, but I did feel like the center of the universe—at least to them.

Now I’ve learned to give them attention in turns, like a referee at a petting match. But sometimes, I still catch them watching each other closely, waiting for their chance to win me over.

Honestly? I don’t mind being the prize. It’s just nice to be so loved… even if it comes with howling competitions and stolen toys.
